Awesome Wild Deers And Temples In Nara City, Japan
During our visit to Kyoto, we decided to take a day trip to Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. We visited Nara Park, a site of the famous temples such as Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji. Nara is also uniquely known for more than one thousand roaming wild deers, that are considered national treasures and are protected.
Getting To Nara City From Kyoto
Before the trip, we stopped at Vie de France Bakery at Kyoto station and fueled up with fresh-baked goods. From Kyoto Station, we used our JR Pass to take a 45-minute train ride to JR Nara Station. From the train station, we walked for about 15-20 minutes to get to Nara Park.
Magnificent Wild Deers at Nara Park
In Nara Park, so many deers were roaming around visitors. The deers were so cute and friendly to people. It was neat that we were able to get so close to these beautiful wild animals.
We purchased some deer crackers to feed them, and the deers knew to bow down when asking for a treat. How adorable!
Kofuku-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple
Nara is home to famous Buddhist temples such as Kofuku-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple. These temples used to be part of the powerful Seven Great Temples and are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We walked in front of the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple, but did not step inside the temple.
Todai-ji Temple is the largest wooden building in the world, and is such a significant monument of ancient Nara. We decided to purchase tickets to look inside this historic temple.
Great Buddha Hall
The Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsu-den) is the main hall of Todai-ji Temple, and is home to the massive Vairocana Buddha statue.
Japanese Curry Lunch
Before leaving Nara, we stopped for Japanese curry lunch at CoCo Curry House. Everything we ordered was delicious. They were the perfect comfort food, especially during a cold winter day.
After lunch, we headed back to JR Nara Station to catch a train back to Kyoto. On a side note, why is everything in Japan so kawaii (cute)? We had seen Hello Kitty construction signs before, and now these painted staircases at JR Nara Station.
